Broadcasting regulation while people couldn't afford food โ€” priorities

Pablo Rodriguez was Heritage Minister for years. His big legislative achievement was Bill C-11, the streaming regulation bill. I'm sure that matters to someone. But while he was managing Canada's cultural broadcasting policy, Canadians were skipping meals, choosing between rent and groceries, and lining up at food banks in record numbers. He was a senior member of a cabinet that failed to treat the cost-of-living crisis with anywhere near the urgency it needed. Being a good Heritage Minister in a government that failed ordinary Canadians on the basics isn't something to be proud of.

Cultural funding while people can't afford rent feels like priorities are wrong

Pablo Rodriguez served as Canada's Heritage Minister for several years. His portfolio covered broadcasting, cultural industries, and streaming regulation. These are real issues. But I have a hard time getting excited about streaming regulations when my grocery bill has gone up $300 a month and my landlord is threatening an eviction for renovations. The government Rodriguez was part of โ€” a senior Liberal cabinet member โ€” failed to address the affordability crisis with anywhere near the urgency it required. He moved to run for the Quebec Liberal leadership after losing his federal role. I hope whoever leads Quebec takes affordability more seriously than his federal cabinet ever did.

Passenger rights reform promised more than it delivered

Pablo Rodriguez inherited an airline accountability mess and had an opportunity to actually fix it. Canadians were โ€” and continue to be โ€” among the worst-served air travellers in the OECD. Rodriguez talked about toughening passenger compensation rules, but the follow-through was slow. Government documents showed that the fee mechanism meant to fund the complaint processing system was stalled internally and never implemented on his watch. Atlantic premiers pushed back on proposed consumer protections by claiming they'd hurt regional carriers, and the government largely accommodated the airline industry. Meanwhile, passengers continued filing thousands of complaints with limited recourse. Canada needed a minister who would fight hard for travellers. What we got was a negotiating position that prioritized industry comfort over passenger rights. The record on this file was genuinely disappointing.
