Kim Pate

Kim Pate spent thirty years working directly with women in Canada's prison system before becoming a senator, and it shows in every intervention she makes. She knows things about solitary confinement, about what incarceration does to people — particularly to Indigenous women who are grossly overrepresented in federal custody — that no one else in Parliament knows from direct experience. She's made the Senate relevant on criminal justice reform in a way it wouldn't otherwise be. When she proposes amendments to solitary confinement legislation or mandatory minimums, she's not arguing from ideology or talking points — she's arguing from what she's seen. That combination of expertise, lived knowledge, and persistent advocacy is exactly what an appointed upper house should be providing.
