Marilyn Gladu is a Conservative MP from Sarnia-Lambton who has been vocal about seniors issues, women's health, and affordability. She ran for the Conservative leadership. But her voters elected a Conservative. They did not elect a Liberal. Floor-crossing without going back to voters for a by-election is one of those things that makes people trust politicians even less. She has a real legislative record — two private members' bills actually became law, which is rare and genuinely impressive. That work matters. But you can't just change parties in the middle of your mandate without a mandate from the people who elected you. That decision wasn't hers to make alone.

Floor-crossing is a meaningful act in a democracy. Voters in Sarnia-Lambton elected a Conservative. They did not vote to be represented by a Liberal MP, and they were not consulted. Whatever her personal reasons for switching — and she had positioned herself as a Conservative civil liberties critic — the constituents she serves had a right to weigh in before she made that decision on their behalf.
