Karina Gould

Karina Gould served as a Liberal cabinet minister through multiple portfolios — Democratic Institutions, International Development, Families Children and Social Development, and House Leader — before being elected as Speaker of the House of Commons in 2024. She represented Burlington, Ontario, and brought a relatively young and energetic presence to a Liberal government that often struggled to project either. As Minister of Democratic Institutions, she oversaw the federal government's response to foreign interference in Canadian elections — a file that produced more studies, inquiries, and public relations management than decisive action. The NSICOP reporting on foreign interference, the Hogue inquiry, and the repeated controversies around Chinese and other foreign state interference with Canadian political processes all fell partly within her ministerial mandate at various points. As Speaker, her brief tenure before the 2025 election was unremarkable — the House continued to function with the dysfunction it had developed under previous speakers, and her appointment came too late in the government's life to establish a distinctive legacy. In Burlington, a community facing rapid housing cost increases and the pressures of the Hamilton-Toronto corridor's development surge, Gould was a capable but not transformative representative. She worked her constituency files, maintained a profile in the riding, and supported the Liberal economic program that her constituents increasingly found was not working for them. She did not seek re-election in 2025.
