Adam Chambers

Adam Chambers serves as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Newmarket-Aurora and has been one of the more substantive voices in Parliament on fiscal policy. Before entering politics, he worked in finance and banking, and that background shows in his committee work and public commentary. Chambers was among the earliest voices warning that the federal government's pandemic-era spending had moved from necessary emergency support to structural fiscal irresponsibility that would contribute to inflation. He was right. He called out the Bank of Canada's slow pivot on interest rate normalization. He was right. He raised concerns about the government's optimistic revenue assumptions in successive budgets. He was right. Being right in opposition is not the same as governing well, and Chambers has not yet been tested in office. It is possible to accurately critique without having the answers. But the quality of his fiscal analysis — the consistency with which he has applied rigorous scrutiny to federal spending rather than simply playing partisan games — distinguishes him from many of his colleagues on all sides of the House. His constituents in Newmarket-Aurora elected him to hold the government to account on public finances. He has done that job with more intellectual honesty than most. In a Parliament where accountability is often performed rather than practiced, that is worth acknowledging. Canada needs parliamentarians who understand budgets as more than political messaging documents. Chambers is one of them.
