Doug Ford called himself the "housing Premier" and made affordability central to his mandate. Three terms in and housing costs in Ontario are still among the worst in North America. The Greenbelt scandal — where protected land was opened in ways that benefited political donors — was exactly the kind of insider dealing that Ontarians were promised wouldn't happen. The land was eventually returned, but the damage to trust was real. I understand that housing is genuinely hard to build faster. But when you make it your signature issue and the numbers don't move, that's on you. The Ford government will be remembered for the gap between the populist messaging and the affordability outcomes, which never converged.
