Kevin Waugh

Kevin Waugh represents Saskatoon South as a Conservative Member of Parliament. He came to Parliament from a career in broadcast journalism — nearly four decades in Saskatchewan media — and brought to his role a communication background and a deep familiarity with Saskatchewan's political culture that shaped his time in the House. Waugh has been a reliable Conservative voice on fiscal and broadcasting files. On CRTC and broadcasting reform, he brought genuine industry knowledge — he had worked in the sector his entire career before politics — and was a credible critic of regulatory decisions affecting local journalism and community broadcasting. He understood the economics of regional media at a time when regional media has been hollowing out at an alarming rate, with devastating consequences for the accountability function of local journalism. On the broader economic files, he has been a consistent critic of federal spending and debt, arguing from a fiscal conservative position that Saskatchewan taxpayers bear a disproportionate share of federal programs that benefit other provinces more than theirs. This is not wrong — Saskatchewan's fiscal contributions to Confederation relative to what it receives back is a legitimate policy debate. Saskatoon is a growing city with real urban challenges: housing costs that have risen sharply, a downtown struggling with poverty and addiction, and a growing tech and post-secondary sector that needs federal support to develop. Waugh's fiscal conservative framework addresses some of these but not all of them.
